With the recent release of a new set of defense gear, the Mythical Hero Set Gear, I thought it was time that we took a closer look at your options and discuss whether the Mythical Gear set is the right choice for defending at this time. Remember, if you are trapping, your gear choice could be the difference between the attacker carrying through with or canceling their rally. Sometimes going BIG is not the right choice! This Guide to Defense Gear will help you decide which gear set, or a mixture of gear pieces, will accomplish your defensive goals.
The “only because my editor made me do it” Disclaimer: The stats and gear selections presented in this article are current as of the date of publication. As anyone who plays Dragon Dimension knows, MZ is always releasing new components to the game and sometimes even changes stat functionality without notice. With every release that occurs, the information contained in this article will become staler (unless updated, of course!). Use this information at your own risk!
Gear Basics
In one of my earlier guides, Fins’ Guide to Gear, I broke down everything you need to know about working your way around the Forge and how to understand the information available to you regarding your gear. It never hurts to revisit that material and I encourage you to do so prior to reading the rest of this article!
Okay, okay! I know. You’re too busy to read another article that you already read months ago. Here is a quick primer for you anyway:
- If you have not already done so, you need to make it a priority to complete the Crafting research tree. Doing so provides an instant boost to the stats for your crafted gear.
- Set bonuses for gear sets apply whether the gear is active on your Hero.
- Set bonuses are based on the lowest level gear piece crafted in the set.
- Set bonuses remain even after the gear set is destroyed.
- Powering up your gear increases the stats higher than what you see in the forge.
- You can hide set gear leveling by swapping out a piece of gear for a piece from another set.
- You cannot hide how far you have powered up your gear; if it is active on your Hero then other players can see your power level.
Now that we have the refresher out of the way, let’s talk gear!
Defensive Gear Sets
At this time there are five Gear Sets that remain relevant in Game of War in the Dragon Dimension. Those five sets are, in order from oldest to newest, the Obsidian Knight Set Gear, the Elite Marshal Set Gear, the Lycan Set Gear, the Lava Titan Set Gear, and the Mythical Hero Set Gear. Many would argue against the relevancy of both the Obsidian Knight and Elite Marshal Set Gear given how low the stats are on the gear and how “trappy” a player would look wearing the gear. I think both Obsidian’s Knight and Elite Marshal remain relevant against solo attacks at the present time, which is why they make the list. Let’s take a closer look at the different gear sets we have available and later we will view a side-by-side comparison of all five sets.
Obsidian Knight’s Set
The Obsidian Knight’s Set Gear consists of the following gear pieces: Obsidian Knight’s Bascinet (helmet); Obsidian Knight’s Battleplate (armor); Obsidian Knight’s Tramplers (feet); Obsidian Knight’s Morning Star (weapon); and Obsidian Knight’s Deflector (accessory). The stats for this set are shown, below:
The Full Set Bonus for this gear, relevant to defense, is an additional 2,000% Empire Defender Attack. However, you can also raise the Set Gear Level of this gear in the Armory for these additional stats: Empire Defender Attack (30,000%); Empire Defender Defense (40,000%); Empire Defender Health (18,000%); and Enemy Troop Attack Debuff (25,000%).
All told, this gear set provides the following stats when placed on your Hero: Empire Defender Attack (74,800%); Empire Defender Defense (52,000%); Empire Defender Health (53,200%); and Enemy Troop Attack Debuff (59,400%). This is more than sufficient to handle a solo from even the strongest player (assuming your research is sufficient, you have enough troops, and use Synergy Health if the attacker is using Synergy Attack).
Elite Marshal Set
The Elite Marshal Set Gear consists of the following pieces: Elite Marshal’s Ascension (helm); Elite Marshal’s Fireplate (armor); Elite Marshal’s Wingtips (feet); Elite Marshal’s Firebrand (weapon); and Elite Marshal’s Grasp (accessory). The stats for this set with each piece of gear powered up to Level 10 are shown, below:
The Full Set Bonus for this gear, relevant to defense, is an additional 3,000% Empire Defender Attack and 5,000% Empire Defender Health. However, you can also raise the Set Gear Level of this gear in the Armory for these additional stats: Empire Defender Attack (40,000%); Empire Defender Defense (45,000%); Empire Defender Health (30,000%); Enemy Troop Attack Debuff (55,000%); and Stronghold March Speed Debuff (200%).
All told, this gear set provides the following stats when placed on your Hero: Empire Defender Attack (108,670%); Empire Defender Defense (126,900%); Empire Defender Health (74,100%); Enemy Troop Attack Debuff (77,000%); and Stronghold March Speed Debuff (599%). At this level, the gear can certainly handle anything from a solo to a rally from a medium-strength lead (assuming your research is sufficient, you have enough troops, and use Synergy Health if the attacker is using Synergy Attack).
Lycan Set
The Lycan Set Gear consists of the following pieces: Lycan Faceplate (helm); Lycan Pelt of the Moon (armor); Lycan Wolf Claws (feet); and Lycan Fang (weapon). The accessories included two possibilities: Lycan Moonstone or Lycan Crown of Wisdom. The Lycan Crown of Wisdom cannot be crafted and the level you have of this accessory, if you even have it, depends on packs that you purchased during a special event. The stats for this set with each piece of gear powered up to Level 10, and without factoring in the Lycan Crown of Wisdom, are shown, below:
The Full Set Bonus for this gear, relevant to defense, is an additional 10,000% Empire Defender Attack and 7,000% Empire Defender Health. However, you can also raise the Set Gear Level of this gear in the Armory for these additional stats: Empire Defender Attack (70,000%); Empire Defender Defense (86,250%); Empire Defender Health (46,800%); and Enemy Troop Attack Debuff (44,000%).
All told, this gear set provides the following stats (when using three of the Lycan Moonstone accessories) when placed on your Hero: Empire Defender Attack (164,900%); Empire Defender Defense (251,450%); Empire Defender Health (105,900%); Enemy Troop Attack Debuff (87,200%); and Stronghold March Speed Debuff (448%). Fully powered, the Lycan Gear Set can handle anything, including a rally from a max or close to max lead (assuming your research is sufficient, you have enough troops, and use Synergy Health if the attacker is using Synergy Attack).
Lava Titan Set
The Lava Titan Set Gear consists of the following pieces: Lava Titan’s Protector (helm); Lava Titan’s Mantle (armor); Lava Titan’s Guard (feet); Lava Titan’s Stonefist (weapon); and Lava Titan’s Girdle (accessory). The stats for this set with each piece of gear powered up to Level 10 are shown, below:
The Full Set Bonus for this gear, relevant to defense, is an additional 122,000% Empire Defender Attack, 150,000% Empire Defender Defense, and 80,000% Empire Defender Health. However, you can also raise the Set Gear Level of this gear in the Armory for these additional stats: Empire Defender Attack (295,000%); Empire Defender Defense (198,000%); Empire Defender Health (364,000%); and Enemy Troop Attack Debuff (105,000%).
All told, this gear set provides the following stats when placed on your Hero: Empire Defender Attack (967,300%); Empire Defender Defense (1,027,200%); Empire Defender Health (815,400%); Enemy Troop Attack Debuff (413,200%); and Stronghold March Speed Debuff (480%). Fully powered, the Lava Titan Gear Set is stronger than any gear set presently available in the game, including the Mythical Hero Gear Set. The Lava Titan Gear Set can handle any rally or march sent out by even the most maxed player (assuming your research is sufficient, you have enough troops, and use Synergy Health if the attacker is using Synergy Attack).
Mythical Hero Set
I guess I should have saved the best for last but we will go with the last-released defensive gear. At present, the Mythical Hero Set cannot be leveled up and the individual pieces cannot be powered up. Assuming that increased Set Gear Levels and/or the ability to Power Up the individual pieces is released, the Mythical Hero set will become stronger than the Lava Titan Set Gear.
The Mythical Hero Set includes the following pieces: Mythical Hero’s Helm (helm); Mythical Hero’s Battleplate (armor); Mythical Hero’s Sabatons (feet); Mythical Hero’s Sabre (weapon); and Mythical Hero’s Grips (accessory). This set also has a special accessory, the Mythical Hero’s Enchanted Artifact, that could be obtained from events and then improved to Level 6 in the Armory. The upgrade materials for this accessory were also available as prizes in events but are also available for purchase in the Black Market. The stats for this set are shown, below:
The Full Set Bonus for this gear, relevant to defense, is an additional 184,600% Empire Defender Attack, 227,000% Empire Defender Defense, and 121,100% Empire Defender Health.
All told, this gear set provides the following stats when placed on your Hero: Empire Defender Attack (690,240%); Empire Defender Defense (852,480%); Empire Defender Health (465,120%); Enemy Troop Attack Debuff (349,760%); and Stronghold March Speed Debuff (512%). The Mythical Hero Set, even without Set Gear Levels and Power Ups, can handle any rally or march sent out by even the most maxed player (assuming your research is sufficient, you have enough troops, and use Synergy Health if the attacker is using Synergy Attack).
My Final Thoughts on Defensive Gear
I prepared a chart that helps to organize all of the stats for the gear that we have looked over in this article. Here is a chart with the overall stats for each set we reviewed:
As you can see, the defensive gear has gotten progressively stronger throughout the releases. No brainer, that is going to happen and should be expected as the attack gear available to rally leads has also gotten stronger. One thing that stuck out to me, however, was the massive jump in stats from Elite Marshal to Lycan and then again to Lava Titan. If you have noticed a severe decrease in the number of rallies you receive during events, this stat jump is to blame. Unfortunately, leads have noticed that very few accounts are burning now and are becoming less active. This is a bad thing for all of us as this decrease in activity will only lead to events becoming BORING!
Since I love to mix and match my gear pieces, especially when I do not have full sets of the newest gear, I made a chart that can help you in piecing together which pieces of gear that may present the strongest defense for your account. This chart has every stat for every gear piece, including the special accessories, for every gear set we reviewed:
For me, I like to be able to control my health and defense stats over my attack stats when it comes to gear. This chart allows me to quickly determine which pieces of gear to add to a preset for optimal performance. Hopefully, it will help you to play around with your gear more efficiently!
Here is my absolute final thought on gear: the gear you use should only act to enhance the stats that you have built through your research and Boost Hall. The hallmark of a strong account is the base you lay in completing research nodes on your account. The next level of strength available to your account lies in the Boost Hall. You want to unlock as many defensive boosts as possible to further strengthen your account. If you do this, you will not need to jump on the newest defensive gear that has been released and will be able to slowly gather that set in a more economical fashion.
