Infantry versus Ranged Missile: Which Attack Configuration is Stronger?

This article is a continuation of our exploration of stats in Dragon Dimension and builds upon my previous max stats articles.  If you need to read up, the articles are available here and here.

Given the release of Hydro Dragon Level 150, there is a debate regarding which attack configuration, infantry versus ranged, is better.  Hopefully, this article will solve that debate by comparing the stats available for each configuration to determine which is stronger at this time.

The “only because my Editor made me do it” Disclaimer:  The stats used in this article are current as of the date of publication.  As anyone who plays Dragon Dimension knows, MZ is always releasing new components to the game.  With every release that occurs, the information contained in this article will become stale (unless updated, of course!).  The purpose of this article is to provide the reader with a logical starting point to determine which attack configuration is better for their particular account.  Use this information at your own risk!

The Tedious Part – Updated Base Stats for a Max Account

My previous max stat articles (which will be updated soon!) have already become outdated with the release of new research trees and VIP 160.  I have adjusted those stats for this article, except for the Draconic Mercenary Devastation research tree, so that you can see the current Base Stats (from research, buildings, VIP, Set Bonuses, Avatars, the Lifetime Boost Hall, and Hero Steadfast Skills) that are available once you max your account for attack.  Remember, there will be some variation from account to account given the stacking boosts that are available in packs at times and which buildings you focus on inside your stronghold (Hospitals versus Villas).  The Base Stats remain important when deciding which attack configuration to use since stats relevant to each attack configuration are included in the Base Stats and there is some variation across the types.  Here are the collected Base Stats (as defined above).

Focusing on the stats in this chart, all of the base stats you see here will apply regardless of the customized stats that you use.  What is interesting, however, is when you compare the base Infantry (red) and Ranged (blue) stats.  As you can see, the base stats favor Ranged missiles in that there are 500% more Ranged Attack and 13,500% More Ranged Defense available versus Infantry Attack and Defense.  So far, Ranged Missiles appear to have the upper hand!

Does Water put out Fire? A Comparison of the Inferno Dragon versus the Hydro Dragon.

As it was MZ’s release of Hydro Dragon Level 150 which prompted this article, it is interesting to see how the dragons stack up against one another.  For comparison purposes, I focused on the attack stats that would apply via the use of each dragon in a Rally, with the understanding that the stats of the rally leader’s dragon will control the overall strength of the rally.  Here is a side-by-side comparison of the stats for the two dragons:

As you can see from this chart, the stats for the Inferno and Hydro Dragons are exactly the same except for Type Health and Troop Attack / Defense / Health.  The Hydro Dragon has 9,000% more Type Health than the Inferno Dragon.  Similarly, the Hydro Dragon has 6,000% more Troop Attack, 9,000% more Troop Defense, and 2,000% more Troop Health.  From this, it is easy to surmise that the troops marching with a Level 150 Hydro Dragon that is properly skilled are much stronger than the troops marching with a comparable Inferno Dragon.  This is another category that goes to Team Water!

Scare your Enemies by Customizing Your Behemoth Slayer Gear Set with Type Gems

The best gear for attacking at present remains the Behemoth Slayer Gear Set.  Here are the stats for that set.

As you can see, the stats on this gear do not differentiate between troop types.  Thus, you will want to customize this gear with either the Unbreakable Gem Set (Infantry) or Atrocity Gem Set (Ranged) depending on which attack configuration you elect to use.  At this point, the stats available for either gem set are the same and are shown below:

If you are keeping tabs on which attack configuration is better, this one is a draw.

Level 300 Hero II – a.k.a “Thumper”

As previously discussed, a properly skilled Hero II remains the strongest Hero to use for attacking at this point.  There is no difference between the three troop types as far as Hero II is concerned so customization is easy.  All you will need to do is apply your Behemoth Slayer Set Gear to your Hero II and you will be ready to rock either attack configuration with the following stats:

Hero II Level 300 Stats

Given the equal treatment of Infantry Attack and Ranged Attack, this category is also a draw.

Banners.  Banners Everywhere.

For attackers, limitations on the presence of various type banners left little room for you to customize your attack configuration.  Here, you will want to select one of the type banners, either the Elite Infantry Banner or the Elite Ranged Banner.  The stats on these banners are the same and provide 20,000% type attack and 25,000% type defense.  From there, you will round out the remaining 4 banner slots with your strongest Empire Assault Attack Banners: Invasion Banner (22,000%), Imperial Attack Banner (15,000%), Firestorm Banner (7,500%), and finally the Special: Elite Domination Banner (22,000%).

Here also we have a draw as neither type is stronger than the other.

Double, Double Toil and Trouble; Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble.  Or, as we say now, Craft Your Potion!

The Surge Vial and Ingredients, which focus on type stats, remains the strongest potion to use for attacking.  The stats will vary from potion to potion, as is the nature of any potion crafted in the Alchemy Lab.  The potions I have crafted have been consistently around 14,520% Attack, Defense, and Health regardless of whether I used the Infantry or Ranged Surge Vial and Ingredients.

The stats available from this feature were also a draw in our comparison.

The Monsters are Coming!

The release of new monster levels will certainly make type missiles more interesting in the future.  For all of you leads who like to max the drops, you will definitely want to turn your attention to the Waterlord Forest Dragon and Were Polar Bear for the type stats available in your monsters.  As you are only able to use 2 monsters in your rally, the suggestion remains that leads continue to use the Timeless Dragon for the Empire Assault stats.  Thus, your attack stats will initially include the following: Empire Assault Attack (68,000%), Empire Assault Defense (60,000%), and Empire Assault Health (82,000%).

Your next selection will be either the Waterlord Forest Dragon (Infantry) or the Were Polar Bear (Ranged).  The stats for each at max are the same – Infantry or Ranged Attack (110,000%), Infantry or Ranged Defense (62,500%), and Infantry or Ranged Health (75,000%).

Alas, another draw!

Putting it all Together

It seems as though Water does, in fact, put out Fire!  If I were a max lead, I would use Range Missiles at this time.  I base this on a couple of “facts” (such that facts exist in this game).  First, it cannot be ignored that the base stats and dragon skills favor Ranged Missiles.  Second, most players are currently set up to take on Infantry Missiles and are heavy on Ranged troops.  Third, doing the unexpected as a Lead tends to pay off in Dragon Dimension.

My hope is that you will take the information from this article and use it to help you configure your attack account the way that you think works best.  Remember, knowledge is power and I hope my commentary empowers you to think about your stats in a critical way and to try new configurations!

And Now, a Word from our Sponsors…

If you have not figured it out yet, that heading is facetious.  MZ has not provided a message to me to give to you.  I do, however, want to point out a glaring omission from this article – the September 2020 Cores.  Now, you may be of the opinion that very few players are using the September 2020 Cores because of the dichotomy between the crafted versus applied stats.  You may have an even bigger opinion regarding the overall functionality of the September 2020 Cores.  Everyone is entitled to their opinion, of course.

Regardless of what you think of the September 2020 Cores, and regardless of the crafted versus applied stats, recognize that the September 2020 Cores are NO JOKE!  Unfortunately, I found this out during this past KvK Warfare event when JunsyJuice hit me.  Now, I must admit that I failed to look at Mr. Junsy’s gear when he hit me.  Fortunately for you, dear readers, the members of my alliance who are more observant than me confirmed that Mr. Junsy was wearing A FULL SET OF SEPTEMBER 2020 CORE GEAR.  Holy.  Shit.  It hurt.  It hurt like hell.  But in a good way.  In a science-y, warn everyone kind of way.

For those of you who like to science this stuff or even all you rubber-neckers out there who cannot look away from the scene of a crash as you are driving by, here are my stats at the time Mr. Junsy decided to visit little ol’ me:

Fins Type Stats

Fins Overall Stats

This, my friends, is what happened to my poor little trap:

Juice destroys Fins

The second hit (yes, there was a second hit because I was shocked at the first hit) was only a little better and only because I had one more dragon reinforcing my Stronghold.

Juice v Fins Part 2

Oh, I forgot this part.  I was boosted with Synergy health when he hit me.  I think it helped?  Maybe?  You be the judge! I shared this information with you because any discussion of Infantry versus Ranged Missile attacks is COMPLETELY trumped by the impact of a hit from a full set of the September 2020 Cores in conjunction with an Infantry Missile attack configuration.
